Iran grows almonds in the cooler northwestern provinces — Tabriz, Qazvin, Hamedan — and the Iranian almond (badam) is a distinct product from the California-origin almond that dominates most international retail shelves. Smaller, denser, higher in oil and with a more pronounced almond flavour, the Iranian almond occupies the premium end of the global almond trade, and the “golden” selection — uniformly sized, light-skinned, intact kernels — is the grade that international roasters, confectioners and gift-box assemblers specify. This page covers the Golden Almonds Direct Sourcing Iran workflow and the Saffron Nuts Gift Box Wholesale value-added programme that pairs Iranian almonds with the country’s other premium food exports into a single consolidated SKU for retail and corporate gifting buyers.
Golden Almonds Direct Sourcing Iran: the grade that defines the trade
Almonds are traded in two forms: in-shell (the nut with its shell intact, sold by weight including shell) and kernel (the shelled nut, sold by net kernel weight). The international trade is overwhelmingly a kernel trade — buyers want usable kernel, not shell — and the grades within the kernel trade are defined by size, colour, breakage rate, and defect tolerance. A Golden Almonds Direct Sourcing Iran order specifies:
- Form: natural kernel (skin on), blanched (skin removed), or sliced / slivered / diced.
- Size: counted per ounce (e.g. 18/20, 20/22, 23/25) — the smaller the count, the larger the kernel. Iranian golden almonds typically run 23/25 to 27/30; the largest Iranian kernels reach 18/20.
- Colour: light amber and light (“golden” is the trade term for the light-amber selection with uniform colour and no blemish).
- Breakage tolerance: typically 2-5% by weight; lower breakage rates command a premium.
- Defect tolerance: split, doubled, chipped, and discoloured kernels, usually capped at 3-5% combined.
- Moisture: 5-6% maximum for export; above 7% the kernel is at mould risk in transit.
The direct-sourcing case for Iranian almonds mirrors the case for other Iranian food exports: eliminating the trading-house margin between the grower and the buyer. Iranian almonds pass through a grower, a local consolidator, a Tabriz or Tehran wholesale market, and often a destination-market importer before reaching a roaster or gift assembler. A direct sourcing relationship with Palude removes the export-trading-house layer and, for volume buyers, the wholesale-market layer. The replacement function — quality verification — is delivered through on-site kernel selection at the packing facility, optical sorting for defects and discolouration, and a photographic pack approval before the container ships.
The Iranian almond versus the California almond: a buyer’s comparison
International buyers usually compare Iranian almonds against California Nonpareil and California Mission grades. The comparison is real and worth making explicitly:
- Size: California Nonpareil produces larger, more uniform kernels than the Iranian almond. A buyer whose application is a uniformly-sized retail pack often prefers California.
- Flavour and oil: the Iranian almond is denser, higher in oil, and has a more pronounced almond aroma. A buyer whose application is almond paste, marzipan, almond butter, or a flavour-forward confection usually prefers Iranian.
- Price: Iranian almonds trade at a premium to California for equivalent sizes, because Iranian supply is smaller and the grower base is fragmented. The premium is the price of the flavour difference.
- Supply reliability: California supply is industrial-scale and year-round. Iranian supply is seasonal (harvest September-October) and carry-stock depletes through the summer.
A buyer’s choice is not “Iranian is better” — it is “which application, which flavour profile, which price point.” We supply Iranian almonds to buyers who have made that comparison and chosen the Iranian flavour profile for their application.
Saffron Nuts Gift Box Wholesale: the value-added consolidation
Saffron Nuts Gift Box Wholesale is the value-added programme that has grown sharply with European and Gulf demand for premium Iranian food gifts. The product is a curated gift box containing Iranian almonds alongside other premium Iranian food SKUs — typically Super Negin or Negin saffron, Iranian pistachios, and sometimes dried figs or barberries — packed in a retail-ready or corporate-gift presentation. The buyer is a retailer, a corporate gifting programme, or a distributor that sells the box as a finished product rather than as a raw ingredient.
The economics of the gift-box programme are attractive for the same reason the pistachio stuffed dates programme is attractive: the buyer is combining multiple Iranian export products into a single higher-margin SKU, and the consolidation reduces the per-SKU logistics cost. Palude runs the gift-box assembly in a HACCP-certified facility, sourcing the saffron from our bulk Super Negin saffron for European importers supply, the pistachios from our bulk Fandoghi pistachios wholesale supply, and the almonds from this vertical. The buyer specifies the box contents, the box format (rigid gift box, kraft gift box, or tray with sleeve), the labelling, and the volume, and we deliver a finished, labelled, export-ready product.
Packaging for almond and gift-box export
Our standard export packaging:
- Natural kernels: 12.5 kg or 25 kg vacuum-sealed foil pouches in cartons; or 25 kg nitrogen-flushed food-grade bags. Palletised for full-container orders.
- Blanched / sliced / slivered: 12.5 kg vacuum cartons (the higher-value processed formats are vacuum-packed to protect the cut surfaces from oxidation).
- Gift boxes: retailer-specified carton counts (typically 6, 12, or 24 boxes per shipping carton); palletised for full-container orders.
- Almond paste / butter: 20 kg food-grade pails or 200 kg drums for industrial confectionery and marzipan manufacturers.
Almonds are a dry cargo and ship in dry (non-reefer) containers, but they are sensitive to moisture and to strong odours — they must not share a container with a cargo that off-gasses (bitumen drums, for example). For buyers consolidating almonds with other Iranian food exports, almonds and pistachios share a dry-container set-point comfortably; almonds and dates do not, because the dates’ refrigeration requirement would over-chill the almonds. Our shipping dates from Iran cold-chain guide covers the consolidation logic.
Lead time, MOQ and the harvest cycle
The Iranian almond harvest runs from late August through October, with the Tabriz and Qazvin harvests peaking in September-October. New-crop kernels enter the wholesale market in October-November. Carry-stock is available year-round but depletes and reprices upward from June onwards.
- Minimum order: 1 metric ton for natural kernel export; 500 kg for blanched / sliced / slivered; 1,000 gift boxes for the gift-box programme.
- Lead time: 14-21 business days from proforma acceptance for stock kernels; 25-35 days for processed formats and gift-box assembly.
- Incoterms: FOB Bandar Abbas, CFR/CIF destination port, DAP where the destination permits.
Documentation set
Every almond and gift-box export ships with:
- Phytosanitary Certificate from the Iranian Plant Protection Organization.
- Certificate of Origin from the Iran Chamber of Commerce.
- HACCP / food safety certificate for the packing facility (gift-box programme).
- Packing list and commercial invoice matched to the bill of lading, with each SKU as a separate line for the buyer’s customs broker.
- Bill of lading (sea) or airway bill (air freight for urgent sample and gift-box orders).
For buyers new to Iranian food import, the Iran export documentation checklist for international buyers is the companion guide to the document workflow. For buyers evaluating almond origin against the broader Iranian food portfolio, our premium Iranian dry fruits supplier and Iranian pistachio verticals round out the consolidation options.
Starting an almond or gift-box sourcing engagement
For almonds, the first step is a written spec: form (natural, blanched, sliced), size (count per ounce), colour, breakage tolerance, volume, and destination port. For the gift-box programme, the first step is the box contents, the box format, the labelling, the volume, and the destination. We respond within one business day with verified supplier options and indicative pricing. To begin, request a sourcing quote and a food-products advisor will pick up the file.
